In September 2026, ILN released Nature and Biodiversity Best Practice: Case Studies and Lessons Learned, a practical guide to how institutional investors and other market participants are approaching nature and biodiversity finance. The booklet examines the growing economic risks associated with biodiversity loss, the financing gap for nature-positive investment, and the characteristics that can make biodiversity opportunities more challenging to finance at scale. It provides a framework spanning the “nature-curious” to “nature-invested” investor journey and explores four mechanisms for engagement: biodiversity integration, sovereign and debt-based mechanisms, institutional-focused thematic platforms, and blended finance platforms.
Drawing on seven real-world case studies from ILN members and partners, the booklet highlights how capital is already being deployed across sustainable land use, conservation finance, agriculture, thematic biodiversity strategies, and natural capital. Rather than prescribing a single approach, it identifies practical lessons, enabling conditions, and emerging opportunities that investors can adapt to their own portfolios as they assess nature-related risks and opportunities and consider pathways for mobilizing capital toward positive biodiversity outcomes.
